Xander and Spike had agreed to meet at a seedy motel when everything had blown
over. The Lighthouse Inn was a central location for them to recap what had
transpired that night.
Xander quietly slipped into the room, flicking on
the light and taking off his camouflage jacket. Overall, he was a little
overwrought. On top of his future issues, now he had soldier memories to contend
with. He turned to face the vampire, who sat smoking in a worn looking chair.
“You think if I stuff any more memories in my head, it’ll explode?
Because--hey, halfway there already!” His grin didn’t hide uncertainty and
worry. “I fucked it up.” The soft voice was full of regret, “Bird’s gonna know
something’s amiss--I told her that we were waiting for the spell to be broken!”
“Hey, no--you did what you could. It’s not like you could be a bastard
to her now that you’ve seen who she really is. I know that, and you should too.
We did our best out there tonight.” The human crossed over to the vampire and
kneeled so they could be face-to-face.
“It’s too much. I’m not supposed
to protect the little bint…to want her safe…” The blonde closed the gap with a
gentle kiss. They were both wired, and the energy buzzed around them like a
physical thing.
“And do you think that I like letting us walk right into
it? All I had to do was lead them to another store, but that would change too
much.”
The human’s distress was palpable as he leaned into Spike’s
embrace. The blonde was determined to bring the boy some peace before the night
was over.
