Spike glimpsed an emaciated, filthy version of himself tied to a chair. His eyes
furrowed as a twinge of hunger and shame flitted through his heart. //Must be
that empathy thing she told us about.// This guy looked really pathetic, shadows
under the eyes as he begged the Slayer for help.
Xander saw himself
lying on Giles’ couch, shivering and agreeing with Spike about something. Some
part of his mind registered that he knew he was dying of a combination of
syphilis, smallpox, and a host of other diseases. The sliver of pain and
hopelessness that washed through him was over in an instant.

Blinking and appalled, Xander
stood up and jabbed his finger at Priya. “No way. No way do I get *syphilis*!
And agreeing with Spike? Now I *know* you’re lying!” He didn’t care if the whole
club heard him screaming about syphilis. He didn’t care that he was out of
Spike’s clutches or that he could escape with his life right now. All Xander
knew was that he had to stop this from happening.
“Damn right! If you
think we’re gonna fall for that--” the vampire started as he fished his
cigarettes and lighter out of his duster pocket.
“I’m in.” The
dark-haired Scooby’s hollow voice trembled behind him.
After a startled
look at the human, the blonde squared his jaw, set his cigarettes on the table
and said, “Me too.”
“Okay, here goes. Put one hand on the Vimurth and
hang on for the ride!” Priya whispered something in a foreign tongue. Spike was
getting anxious and he saw the human start to fidget, then the world dropped out
from under them.
